I dunno that there truly is an answer to these kinds of questions, but your post prompted me to revisit some old similar topics…

I’m not sure I’ll ever quite be able to reconcile the difference between killing an enemy in the defense of your country and slaying another person in a non-war setting. That is, don’t both of these actions – regardless of the underlying motivations or perceived needs – go equally against the 6th Commandment?

And if I could feel or be “right” in killing an enemy in defense of my country, why shouldn’t I likewise be able to feel or be “right” about killing an enemy in defense of my community at home? Is there really that much of a difference between “patriotism” and “vigilantism?”

At least the Catholic church is rational in this respect. They are against both the death penalty and abortion.
