Do Not Deliver

Tuesday, January 29th, 2008

A lawmaker in Maryland is attempting to create a “Do Not Deliver” registry for free newspapers. It would work the same way as the “Do Not Call” registry. People who do not wish to have these papers left at their doorstep could sign a registry to put a stop to unwanted deliveries. My name would be on that list the second the registry activates.

For those of you don’t live in metropolitan areas, this may not be a problem for you. In my neck of the woods we are forever getting free newspapers. This drives me insane. These papers tend to go right from my sidewalk to my recycling bin. Such a waste. Sadly, many of my neighbors’ papers never even get recycled. They pile up on lawns, curbs and in drainage ditches and slowly rot in their plastic sleeves. There is no reason to piddle natural resources away on papers that are not wanted and, therefore, not read. I get just as mad over this practice as I do junk mail.

Groups who are trying to stop this legislation from going through are arguing a registry of this nature would limit freedom of speech. What?!!! The real reason these newspapers toss their product to every doorstep possible is so they can claim high distribution numbers. Distribution numbers are what drive advertising rates. Papers with a ‘supposed’ reader base of 100,000 can charge advertisers more than a paper with a reader base of 10,000. This is about money, not freedom of speech. They would still be free to write whatever they wish. They would still be free to distribute their paper at no cost. The only thing they wouldn’t be free to do is toss their product on the doorstep of someone who has asked to be excluded.

I hope this legislation passes. The time has definitely come for people to start putting a stop to the squandering of our resources in the name of corporate dollars. Justifying the behavior with constitutional arguments just turns my stomach.

Two More Weeks

Monday, January 28th, 2008

It is two more weeks until my State’s primary and I am actually feeling like my vote will mean something this time. For States that fall after Super Tuesday, so much is usually a foregone conclusion that the mentality is “why bother”. Both parties are running close contests this year. So far there doesn’t appear to be a clear winner on either side of the fence.

The record breaking voter turn-out is encouraging too. I firmly believe no one politician is going to be able to get America back on track. No matter who is elected, they will need the involvement of the American people to accomplish anything. The number of people participating in primaries is a sign Americans are starting to understand they need to insert themselves into the solution. I hope the trend continues beyond the voting booth and into their daily lives and habits.

Speaking of MySpace

Sunday, January 27th, 2008

A few weeks ago I posted how MySpace might be contributing to the decline of some of my peers’ social skills. It wasn’t a random comment. Friends of mine have recently become the target of silly, sophomoric, harassment campaigns. MySpace has been the vehicle of choice for much of this ridiculous behavior. The offenders aren’t pimply faced teenagers, but grown women with children. Most of the antics have been harmless. They have mostly served to highlight the immaturity of those behind this nonsense.

Of course, since initial efforts to get a reaction have failed, those involved keep trying to take things up a notch. It’s not unlike a toddler who throws himself on the floor kicking and screaming when seeking attention. A few pranks last week went far enough some actually had to contact MySpace for intervention and advice. Guess what? The site designed by young people primarily for young people actually has a very mature way of dealing with cyber harassment. Turns out nothing on MySpace is truly private. MySpace understands how vulnerable internet communities are to misuse and cooperates fully with law enforcement and attorneys. Way to go MySpace! It is reassuring to know if any behavior is truly out of line, my friends won’t have to move mountains to take action.

I still believe MySpace’s environment can turn some adults into teenagers; however, I applaud MySpace for being prepared when that indeed happens.

Thank You

Sunday, January 27th, 2008

Last week a young man delivered Thai noodles to my door. I didn’t feel like cooking that night, you see. He wasn’t much for eye contact and clearly was in a hurry to move on to his next gig. We made the food/money swap and I offered a “thank you” as I prepared to close my door. At that, he looked up and gave me a big smile. “I’m the one who should be saying thank you to you,” he said. “Thank you for your business.” He gets it! He understands how it all should work. It was so refreshing. I am forever thanking people for letting me give them my business and they are forever saying “you’re welcome.” It may not have been a life changing moment, but it certainly was one that made me smile.

Karl Rove

Wednesday, January 16th, 2008

It is interesting to me how freely Karl Rove is attacking Hillary Clinton.  I’m not necessarily a Clinton supporter.  Whether someone likes her or feel she is a viable candidate is not really my point.  Americans listening to Rove’s opinions of Senator Clinton should consider one very important fact…HE IS A REPUBLICAN POLITICAL STRATEGIST.  The only reason I can come up with for him publicly criticizing Clinton is that he is concerned a Republican won’t be able to top her in the election.  The Republican candidates are suffering this year.  It is my guess Rove is hoping to stir the pot just enough so a more ‘beatable’ Democrat is on the ballot come November.

Mystery Solved

Tuesday, January 15th, 2008

I’ve been scratching my head over what seems to be a decline in the maturity of some of my peers. It’s silly things like snarky back-talk, references to popularity, name calling, foot stomping and generally rude behavior. The mystery to me was what the catalyst to this behavior could be. I don’t believe these individuals were always immature. What could cause a person to regress to their teenage years? Why do I often feel I am back in high school again? It hit me all of the sudden this morning.

You know how when people move to a new area they gradually pick up the local accent? My uncle grew up in Michigan and now speaks with a Kentucky drawl. Madonna also grew up in Michigan and now has a British accent. Accents aren’t the only thing to change. The language we choose can be altered by new places too. After 3 years in Texas, I would occasionally comment on something I was “fixin” to do.

Think about the above. As a result of the internet, more and more adults are spending huge amount of times with online social groups. Many groups (MySpace, Facebook) were originally created by younger people for younger people. Because of this, more adults are actually in environments where teen behavior plays a dominant role. Is it a huge leap some might eventually start talking and acting like teenagers? It seriously makes sense to me.

I confess I have a MySpace and Facebook account. I haven’t done anything with my Facebook account. In truth, I have no clue how it works. My MySpace account has been used to find old friends and post my blog. That’s really all I know how to do there too. Perhaps it is a good thing I’m clueless as to how some of this stuff works. A majority of my time is still spent with adults. I hope that makes me immune to acting like a teenager again any time soon.

Worried

Wednesday, January 9th, 2008

Am I the only one worried our Commander in Chief is on the verge of launching us into another war we can’t afford, staff or expect international support for?  For the past several months he has essentially advertised to anyone who will listen he is looking for a reason to tango with Iran.  As much as Iran’s leadership is committed to maintaining peace (sarcasm), I have a growing fear they just might supply Bush with the excuse he has been looking for to dance.

Magic

Tuesday, January 8th, 2008

I never really believed in magic before. It took some prodding for me to try the Magic Eraser. It didn’t seem possible something could actually exist that would magically make scuffs and marks on my walls disappear. You know what? It did. The marks are gone. Now I just need some magic to undo the swirl marks it left in my paint in the process. Do they sell any magic for that? I already know about the magic paint can and brush. I’m just wondering if there are any other options. No? Didn’t think so. Back to my original opinion of magic.

It Doesn’t Make Sense

Why did God make our teeth white only to turn around and make coffee, tea and chocolate so heavenly?

Feel The Rain On Your Skin

Saturday, January 5th, 2008

I love the lyrics to Natasha Bedingfield’s song “Feel The Rain On Your Skin.” I first heard it as the theme song to the television show “So You Think You Can Dance” last season. It is the kind of song that really wants to make you jump up and experience life. Here are the lyrics:

I am unwritten, can’t read my mind, I’m undefined
I’m just beginning, the pen’s in my hand, ending unplanned

Staring at the blank page before you
Open up the dirty window
Let the sun illuminate the words that you could not find

Reaching for something in the distance
So close you can almost taste it
Release your innovations
Feel the rain on your skin
No one else can feel it for you
Only you can let it in
No one else, no one else
Can speak the words on your lips
Drench yourself in words unspoken
Live your life with arms wide open
Today is where your book begins
The rest is still unwritten

Oh, oh, oh

I break tradition, sometimes my tries, are outside the lines
We’ve been conditioned to not make mistakes, but I can’t live that way

Staring at the blank page before you
Open up the dirty window
Let the sun illuminate the words that you could not find

Reaching for something in the distance
So close you can almost taste it
Release your inner visions
Feel the rain on your skin
No one else can feel it for you
Only you can let it in
No one else, no one else
Can speak the words on your lips
Drench yourself in words unspoken
Live your life with arms wide open
Today is where your book begins

Feel the rain on your skin
No one else can feel it for you
Only you can let it in
No one else, no one else
Can speak the words on your lips
Drench yourself in words unspoken
Live your life with arms wide open
Today is where your book begins
The rest is still unwritten

Staring at the blank page before you
Open up the dirty window
Let the sun illuminate the words that you could not find

Reaching for something in the distance
So close you can almost taste it
Release your inner visions
Feel the rain on your skin
No one else can feel it for you
Only you can let it in
No one else, no one else
Can speak the words on your lips
Drench yourself in words unspoken
Live your life with arms wide open
Today is where your book begins

Feel the rain on your skin
No one else can feel it for you
Only you can let it in
No one else, no one else
Can speak the words on your lips
Drench yourself in words unspoken
Live your life with arms wide open
Today is where your book begins
The rest is still unwritten
The rest is still unwritten
The rest is still unwritten

Oh, yeah, yeah

I just love how this song encourages you to open your mind to the paths you have in life, insert some courage and just go for it. It’s something I’m thinking about a great deal these days. The beginning of a new year tends to get the mind spinning about the future. Perhaps yesterday’s blog about “Crossing the Line” already tipped you off to that.
